How Facebook turns engineers into leaders

Facebook's young, engineer-driven corporate culture creates unique challenges when it comes to nurturing leaders, says Bill McLawhon, the company's head of leadership development. Facebook's workers are data-driven problem solvers, but they need to be taught the "soft" skills required to influence and persuade others, McLawhon explains. "I don't have to convince leaders at Facebook that they need these capabilities. They almost unconsciously know that these skills are the only way to get things done in such a flat, meritocratic organization," he says.
