Physicians express concerns over testosterone gel ads

Doctors said direct advertising for testosterone gels may be bad for consumers while driving up health care costs. The medical benefit of the gels is questionable and they can have dangerous side effects, doctors said. Drug advertising encourages the inappropriate and excessive use of drugs by convincing consumers that they are sick and require medicine to treat it, experts said. A representative of AbbVie Pharmaceuticals, which sells AndroGel, said the campaigns help educate patients.
