Survey: U.S. consumers shaken by government debt dysfunction

The narrowly avoided calamity of a U.S. default did a number on consumer sentiment, with the monthly Bloomberg Consumer Comfort Index striking a two-year low of minus 31 this month. "The government shutdown has resulted in a startling decline in consumer sentiment and likely business sentiment that will result in a much slower pace of consumption and capital expenditures in the current quarter. Should lawmakers kick a decision into early 2014, it is likely that consumer sentiment will keep deteriorating," said Bloomberg economist Joseph Brusuelas.
