Market reaction to bioplastics spurs developments, applications

Renewable-chemical companies are eying a share of the $1.3 trillion global market for polymers by introducing a host of new, sustainable chemical building blocks for bioplastics. Demand for bioplastics is expected to reach almost 1 million tons by 2013, according to Freedonia Group, while global production of such material will increase to more than 1.6 million tons next year, says trade group European Bioplastics. "Conventional oil-based plastics remain cheaper for the time being, but bioplastics will be applied in more and more sectors and industries within the next few years," a European Bioplastics spokeswoman said.
