"Domestic nameplates comprised over 72% of the nearly 50 million cars and light trucks scrapped in the U.S. during 2008 through 2011. Concurrently, domestic nameplate new-vehicle sales averaged 5.5 million per year (down 40% from their 1999 to 2004 annual average), with domestic sales share slumping to 46%.
