Joint Commission suggests ways to prevent "retained surgical items"

The Joint Commission announced more than 770 reports over the last seven years of sponges, towels, pieces of surgical instruments, stapler parts, needles and other objects left inside surgery patients. The commission recommends creating a standardized system to account for all surgical items, developing policies and procedures to prevent objects being left behind and holding regular surgical team briefings.
