Railroads eyed as track out of economic doldrums

In the past few decades, more than $440 billion has been poured into infrastructure and equipment by freight railroads, which account for 43% of intercity freight volume, according to the Association of American Railroads. "Railroads are receiving a lot of attention right now as the nation struggles to find ways to increase industrial competitiveness, improve our transportation infrastructure and minimize impacts on the economy," said John Giles, RailAmerica CEO.
