Should hospitals be doing more to go green?

Hospitals produce huge amounts of waste and pollution -- almost 6 million tons of trash a year, according to one estimate, along with 215 million metric tons of carbon dioxide. Greening hospitals is a complex task, since hazardous waste can't be disposed of through normal channels. Still, writes Nina Shen Rastogi, many health institutions could be doing more than they are to clean up their acts. "To fulfill the Hippocratic Oath to 'do no harm,' hospitals need to keep the planet healthy along with their patients," Rastogi writes.
