FTC urges companies to be careful about collecting customer data

U.S. and Canadian regulators are warning companies to tread lightly when it comes to collecting and storing customer data. David Vladek, director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection, a division of the Federal Trade Commission, joined his Canadian counterpart Tuesday in discussing privacy concerns at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco. Vladek said it is not uncommon to find applications pulling unnecessary data, such as geolocation information, and he urged companies to familiarize themselves with applicable laws to avoid violating consumer privacy.
