Congress cuts federal spending on ED drugs

Congress sent to President George W. Bush a bill to end Medicaid and Medicare spending on erectile dysfunction drugs and to spend the money instead on the poor and on victims of Hurricane Katrina. Medicaid spending on ED drugs would stop as of Jan. 1, 2006, and Medicare spending on Jan. 1, 2007, although states could continue to subsidize the drugs under Medicaid if they were found to be medically necessary.
