Nike strides toward greener footwear

Once criticized for its labor practices, today Nike's heightened sense of corporate responsibility is expanding to include green-manufacturing techniques and a sustainability agenda aimed at lowering footwear waste by 2011. The company's Considered Design initiative indexes the materials used in its products to predict the environmental impact of its design decisions, including the waste produced in the manufacturing process and the life span and recyclability of the materials used.
