UAL shares rise after quarterly results beat expectations

United Airlines parent corporation UAL reported a third-quarter loss of $57 million to beat analysts' expectations. Shares of UAL jumped 9%. UAL and the broader airline industry have had to deal with deteriorating demand and volatile fuel costs over the past year. The company also said it expects a 0.5% drop in 2009 mainline unit costs, not including fuel, certain accounting charges and profit sharing.
