AABB president discusses transfusion safety, management issues

AABB is committed to improving donor and patient outcomes in several areas, such as ensuring that blood transfusions are safe and that the procedures are really needed by patients, said Dr. James P. AuBuchon, president of AABB, in this interview with ADVANCE. The Red Blood Cell Transfusion Guidelines Working Group is working hard to come up with recommendations for appropriate indications for red blood cell transfusions, AuBuchon said. He also highlighted the role that laboratorians play in this field, saying that their system knowledge can help in the development of protocols for deciding on whether patients need transfusions or other interventions.
