Blacks with GDM face higher type 2 diabetes risk

A study in Diabetologia of nearly 140,000 women revealed that black women with gestational diabetes mellitus had a 52% higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes later than white women. The rate of subsequent type 2 diabetes in blacks who developed glucose intolerance during pregnancy was 29 per 1,000 person-years compared with 3.2 per 1,000 in those who maintained normal glucose levels during pregnancy.
