Coles' low prices prompt scrutiny

Sales of meat, seafood, fruit, vegetables and spices are up in Australia, as consumers eat out less and purchase more supermarket-brand groceries in a difficult economy, Coles Supermarkets Managing Director Ian McLeod says. Coles, which has seen sales increase for five consecutive financial years, despite cutting prices, is under investigation by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission regarding claims that the company bullies suppliers to secure low prices.
