Funding woes drive education cuts in Ireland

Teachers and principals in Ireland are speaking out against cuts that increase class sizes and eliminate 1,000 teaching positions, with one official calling the measures a "savage attack" against primary-school children. Officials said Ireland's class sizes are the highest in the European Union, and argued that further increases will make it impossible to schedule field trips and other extracurricular activities because of a lack of adult supervision.
