EMarketer projects that 486 million people worldwide will use mobile location-based service applications by 2012, up from 18.9 million in 2007. These consumers will access location-based services under a number of business models, such as monthly subscriptions, short-term or daypass subscriptions (for example, while on vacation), and ad support or sponsorship. With the advent of more-powerful and inexpensive smartphones, mobile carriers are taking some of the first major steps toward making location-based services a common mobile application for consumers.
