Continental beats expectations with $18M loss

Continental Airlines lost 14 cents a share in the third quarter, a dramatic improvement over the same period last year, when losses reached $2.09 per share. Excluding special items, the company would have earned $2 million for the quarter, far surpassing analysts' predictions. Traffic declined less than 1%, but Continental said heavy discounting was needed to keep passengers flying.
