Researchers explore how gum, chocolate can detect malaria

Several researchers focusing on malaria won funding in the third round of the Grand Challenges Explorations program from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. One of the projects will focus on developing a chewing gum that can be used to detect malaria in a person's saliva while another will explore whether high levels of flavanols, compounds found in chocolate, green tea and nuts, can help keep malaria infection at low levels.
