Always check an employee's references to avoid a hiring mistake, writes Alison Green. She suggests asking probing questions and not limiting yourself to the reference list provided by the candidate. "References are only a waste of time if you treat them like just an item to check off your list, rather than as a genuinely valuable part of your assessment process," she writes.
