NCLB bill clears Senate committee

The Senate's education committee approved an amended bill Thursday to overhaul No Child Left Behind, and the lead sponsor says he is hopeful the full Senate will vote before Thanksgiving. The bill would strike down a requirement that schools meet federal proficiency targets and would not require states and schools to develop evaluation systems for teachers and principals.
