Dissolving stent trial puts game-changer claims to the test

Abbott's dissolving Absorb stent is undergoing clinical trials at 60 U.S. sites including four hospitals in the Pittsburgh area and New York's Mount Sinai Medical Center. The stents take longer to place than conventional devices, but they dissolve within two to three years and may reduce the need for anticoagulant therapy. The single-blind study, which aims at enrolling 1,000 patients, is "a really important piece of clinical research," said SCAI fellow Dr. Roxana Mehran of Mount Sinai's Icahn School of Medicine.
