FREEDOM sub-study finds little long-term quality-of-life difference between PCI, bypass

Diabetes patients with multivessel disease experienced a significant improvement in quality of life with both PCI and bypass surgery, according to a FREEDOM trial sub-study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. PCI also offered near-term advantages, and the authors found no major differences in long-term health between the two procedures. "Overall [quality of life] incorporates mortality and stroke as well as these other things like angina that we know are important to patients, so it's great to be able to say to them that overall the two interventions look pretty much equivalent," said SCAI fellow Dr. Ajay Kirtane.
