California's green-chemistry initiative is forcing manufacturers to eliminate potentially harmful chemicals from their products, leading some to rethink their national strategy. Johnson & Johnson is removing formaldehyde from its baby shampoo, Proctor & Gamble will stop using triclosan in its products, and Target and Wal-Mart are imposing tougher green-chemistry rules on their suppliers.
