Indian sugar millers want to make ethanol directly from sugarcane

Sugar millers in India are requesting permission to produce ethanol directly from sugarcane, which is prohibited in the country because of fears it might affect sugar production. The government should ease restrictions on cane-based ethanol production since there is already a glut of sugar on the market, with supplies in the 2013-2014 season projected to be the country's second-biggest ever, according to the Indian Sugar Mills Association.
