Northeast steps up natural-disaster-mitigation efforts after Sandy

The destruction that Hurricane Sandy caused in the Northeast has prompted political and business leaders to develop programs designed to mitigate the risks posed by natural disasters. The storm also made officials and communities aware that a similar catastrophe could hit in the future, experts said. "From our perspective, there seems to be an awareness of the need to change" to improve readiness for extreme weather, said Tom Varney of Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty.
