RD: Choose rye breads with whole grains, not refined flour

Rye bread may appear to be a healthier choice than white bread, but it often contains refined flour, registered dietitian Leslie Beck writes. Check nutrition labels and choose rye breads made with whole grains, Beck writes. Beck also suggests breads that use a sourdough starter instead of yeast, which helps to give them a lower glycemic index.
