SCAI calls for regional simulation centers, standards

Simulated interventional cardiology procedures allow residents to gain experience in low-volume and complex procedures and experienced practitioners to maintain their credentials, according to a paper in Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions published by members of SCAI's Simulation Committee. The report calls for the establishment of regional simulation centers and standards. "Interventional cardiology is particularly well-suited for simulation because the procedures are complex, learning curves can be steep and complications can be life-threatening," said lead author and SCAI fellow Dr. Sandy M. Green. "While simulation cannot replace real patient experience, it provides a safe arena to develop and refine skills that improves overall patient care."
