MedImmune to provide 1 million more doses of FluMist

Maryland-based MedImmune said it will produce an additional 1 million doses of FluMist vaccine, raising its total to 3 million doses, a move that will help ease the flu vaccine shortage, according HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson. However, the vaccine can only be used by healthy people aged 5 to 49, because it contains a weakened live virus that could be a problem for those at highest risk for flu complications. Thompson said FluMist would be appropriate for health care workers and people who care for high-risk individuals.
