Hawaii union proposes state-subsidized teacher housing

Union leaders say Hawaii's 10% turnover is likely due in part to the high price of housing: Hawaii teachers start with a $42,000 salary, but median home prices are nearly $700,000. "The intent of this is ... to encourage teachers to put down roots in the communities where they teach," said union president Roger Takabayashi. "This bill offers one way to alleviate a burden from teachers' backs, so they can focus on teaching and not so much on survival."
