30,000 new Texas teachers may need generalist certification

Some 30,000 newly hired Texas teachers -- primarily in elementary grades -- may need to take a general-competency test or face losing their jobs because of a revised federal interpretation of requirements for highly qualified teachers under No Child Left Behind. Federal officials said teachers hired in previous years who took subject-specific certification exams will not need to take generalist exams as long as they continue in the same teaching assignment.
