FSMA implementation has growers concerned

Produce growers in Washington state are increasingly concerned about the Food Safety Modernization Act, which includes 548 pages of standards proposed by the FDA. Industry experts and state agricultural departments are urging the FDA and the USDA to develop crop-specific regulations and restart the public-comment process, because the FSMA treats all commodities the same. Growers say the price of produce could rise if they are required to invest in different irrigation systems and equipment to meet the standards.
