Google supports free expression on the Web with new cybersecurity initiative

Google is promoting a new service designed to protect websites around the world from distributed denial-of-service attacks, with a special focus on helping groups -- such as news and human rights organizations -- that are targeted as a means of silencing their message. Project Shield is an offshoot of the Google Ideas initiative and will be offered for free to qualifying groups. It has already been used in Iran, Syria and Kenya and will soon be accompanied by a Chrome extension called uProxy that provides unfettered access to the Web in countries that restrict the Internet.
