Restoration costing nearly $60M to begin on U.S. Capitol dome

The 150-year-old dome of the U.S. Capitol in Washington is getting a makeover to address more than 1,000 cracks and other problems, according to these reports. The structure has deteriorated due to weather damage, and the damage is not from the 2011 earthquake, according to Justin Kieffer, a spokesman for the architect of the Capitol. The cast-iron dome will be covered with scaffolding for about two years while repairs go on.
