Travel leaders call for government communications plan in case of future shutdown

The 16-day government shutdown forced the closure of 401 national parks across the U.S., costing an estimated $2.4 billion in lost travel business. Lisa Simon, president of National Tour Association, has called on the government to establish a communication platform to help tour operators in case another shutdown occurs. "We recognize that it's impossible to predict whether or not there will be an actual government shutdown, as negotiations can go into the final moments, as they did in this case," Simon said. "However, we recommend that there be a communications plan that pushes out information to the travel trade and the public."
