Why a double roof?

Construction of "double roofs" or "rain roofs" is usually done to prevent leaks, improve drainage and make space for insulation. Such processes involve the use of steel trusses, plywood or OSB sheathing, and shingles or a metal covering, according to this article, which includes many photos of roofs under construction. At a school building in Wisconsin, steel trusses with multiple 90-degree bends were used to prevent the roof from bowing.
