Merck seeks OTC status for Mevacor

The FDA will ask a panel of outside experts to review data supporting the use of Merck's cholesterol-lowering drug Mevacor as an over-the-counter treatment. If approved as a nonprescription medication, Merck aims to market Mevacor as a once-a-day drug to prevent heart attacks and control cholesterol levels.
