Firms that cater to elite see signs of slowdown

Small businesses that cater to the elite are bellwethers for the economy, says BusinessWeek reporter John Tozzi, who found business was down for a shoe repairer, an upscale tie shop and a dry cleaners chain. Lately, writes Tozzi, "selling $4 shines seems to be as hard as unloading mortgage-backed securities."
