Elective on diversity is taught at New York school

One school district on New York's Long Island is offering seventh- and eighth-grade students an elective course in diversity. The yearlong course -- titled "Seedlings" after the national Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity professional-development program -- grades students on their participation in classroom discussions and how they challenged themselves. "What I'm looking to do is build acceptance, awareness and appreciation that people may be different than you," the class teacher said.
