Successful companies usually operate as hierarchies, with those at the top getting more responsibilities as well as additional compensation, but they generally also work like neighborhoods, with employees working for the common good, writes Art Markman of the University of Texas at Austin. "A company cannot succeed unless employees start to think of themselves as part of something bigger than themselves," he writes. To foster that feeling, companies must take steps such as making educational opportunities available, he writes.
