Growth of coherent optics puts pressure on legacy fiber companies

Thanks to the rise of next-generation optical transport systems based on coherent detection, it now costs considerably less to scale the capacity of undersea cables to 100 Gbps to support increasing data demand, analysts say. This is seen as good news for companies such as Ciena, Infinera and Xtera Communications, which specialize in coherent optics, but for the likes of Alcatel-Lucent and Fujitsu -- which count on new subsea construction to generate revenue -- the trend is said to be creating additional challenges.
