Md. schools work to enroll more students in free-meal program

School-nutrition professionals in Maryland say they are working to provide access to free school meals for more disadvantaged students. Besides the nutritional benefits, officials say schools also rely on the funding tied to the free and reduced-price meal program. John Walker, interim director of food and nutrition services for Baltimore City Public Schools, said the district receives about $5,000 per child in state aid -- amounting to more than $323 million in one year.
