Data from two European studies found the presence of group B coxsackieviruses was associated with type 1 diabetes onset in pediatric patients. The analysis did not find an association between type 1 diabetes and 35 other types of enterovirus. If a causal relationship can be determined, a vaccine for the viruses may help to prevent some incidences of type 1 diabetes, said a JDRF executive. The study was published in Diabetes.
