Schools move to longer hours amid debates over strategy, benefits

Many districts are expanding the school day in the hopes of raising student achievement, but critics say the way additional time is used is crucial to its effectiveness. In one Providence, R.I., school, an extra hour has been added each school day that is devoted to in-depth, mostly off-campus study of STEM -- science, technology, engineering and math.
