Report: Shale represented 39% of U.S. natural gas output in 2012

The use of hydraulic fracturing has made the U.S. the biggest producer of shale natural gas in the world, according to a report from the Energy Information Administration. Shale gas output represented 39% of the country's total natural gas production last year, the report shows. "There's no commercially viable shale gas production outside the United States and Canada" despite exploratory testing done in other countries, said EIA economist Aloulou Fawzi.
