SEC chairman throws support behind compliance professionals

Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Mary Jo White stressed the importance of compliance programs for companies and investors this week at the annual meeting of the National Society of Compliance Professionals. White said the agency would step up enforcement efforts against firms that didn't maintain adequate compliance programs, but added that managers, internal auditors, the C-suite and boards of directors must also contribute to create effective controls. The agency has also instituted the Compliance Program Initiative, aimed at registered advisers who fail to adopt an adequate compliance program.
