Buffalo, N.Y., School Board Slashes 433 Teacher Jobs

In an unusual move, the Buffalo Board of Education voted Oct. 24 to lay off 433 teachers and 124 other employees to eliminate the district's $28 million budget gap. The board's action, sure to increase average class sizes, was somewhat ironic given that many school systems are facing severe staff shortages.
