The average American woman would never fit into trendsetting designer clothes that are rarely manufactured to fit those that aren't ultrathin. "In a time when retailers are struggling to turn a profit, the disconnect between fashion and reality is a puzzle," wrote Valli Herman. Experts say designing for the plus-size woman requires different techniques and fabrics, which most designers aren't trained to use.
