Ventas has evolved from a struggling company to an industry leader since Debra Cafaro took the helm of the company as CEO in 1998. An aggressive acquisition program has increased the company's portfolio to more than $20 billion in assets, $11 billion of which were acquired over the past year. Cafaro says the firm's current strategy is to decrease its percentage of revenue from government sources such as Medicare and increase its revenue from private payers. Future acquisition activity will focus on upscale senior housing facilities and medical office properties.
