GM uses location data to warn drivers of traffic dangers

General Motors is using Dedicated Short-Range Communications in transponders and mobile phones to share location data with cars and warn drivers of slowing traffic and other road dangers. When vehicles, mobile devices and transponders on road fixtures all share location data, the system can prevent accidents, the company notes. "Later this decade, smartphones, transponders and embedded systems could be working together to make our roadways safer," said GM's Don Grimm.
